The first historical mention o the toun dates tae 980. In 1078 the consuls o Sassuolo swore lyalty tae the commune o Modena. In 1373 the ceety passed tae the Este faimily at the request o the ceetizens thairsels, who obtained the richt tae extract watter frae the river Secchia.
The toun wis a possession o the Duchy o Modena till the 19t century.
