The first diveesion o the Republic in sax depairtments happened on 27 Januar 1816. Twa mair depairtments wur formit later in that year. At the time, Paysandú Depairtment includit aw the territory north o the Río Negro, which includit the actual depairtments o Artigas, Rivera, Tacuarembó, Salto, Paysandú and Río Negro. On 17 Juin 1837 a new diveesion o Uruguay wis made an the depairtment o Salto wis creatit includin the actual Artigas Depairtment. Its feenal borders wur defined on 1 October 1884, whan the Artigas Depairtment wis separatit frae Salto bi the Act o Ley Nº 1854.
