Sønderborg Municipality (German: Sonderburg), is a municipality (Dens, kommune) in the Region o Soothren Denmark pairtially on the Jutland peninsulae an pairtially on the island o Als in sooth Denmark, at the border wi Germany. The municipality covers an aurie o 496.57 km2 (191.73 sq mi), an haes a total population o 76,236 (as o 2008). Its mayor is Aase Nyegaard, a member o the local poleetical pairty Fælleslisten (literally "The Common Leet").

On 1 Januar 2007, due tae Kommunalreformen ("The Municipal Reform" o 2007), the umwhile Sønderborg municipality wis combined wi Augustenborg, Broager, Gråsten, Nordborg, Sydals, an Sundeved municipalities tae form a new Sønderborg municipality. The umwhile Sønderborg municipality covered an aurie o 54 km2 (21 sq mi), an haed a total population o 30,555 (2005). Its last mayor wis Arne Peder Hansen, a member o the Venstre (Leeberal Pairty) poleetical pairty.
