The etymology o the River Annan isna kent, awtho some soorces suggest it micht mean simple "watter", fae a Celtic leid. It gied its name tae Annandale, an umwhile stewartry kiverin a lairge pairt o modren Dumfriesshire, an til the port toun o Annan near its mooth.

Descrivin eedit

The River Annan rises on Annanheid Hill, 5 mile north o Moffat, near the soorce o the Watter o Tweid (aboot 1.2 mile awa),[1] an close an aw til the soorce o the River Clyde (6.5 mile awa).[2] It syne flowes throu the Deil's Beef Tub whaur it is jynt bi a seicont soorce that rises on Hartfell. It syne flowes past the touns o Moffat and Lockerbie. Twa mile oot o Moffat, it is jynt bi the Moffat Watter flowin wastwart fae Loch Skene an the Evan Watter flowin eastwart fae the upper airt o Lanrikshire.[1] Ablo this, it is jynt by the Kennel Watter fae the wast an the Dryfe Watter fae the east.[1] It reaks the sea 2 mile past the port o Annan.
