eeditPagan Altar formed in 1978 in Brockley, Ingland. Alangside Witchfinder General, they are ane o the few NWOBHM baunds tae play doom metal.[1] They wur ignored bi mainstream metal media durin the early an mid 1980s; their influence did no emerge till efter the 1980s incarnation haed braken up.
Their gigs wur characterized bi moody, epic an hivy muisic interpretit wi heichlie visual stage aspect which accentit their interest for occult themes. Pagan Altar's anerlie release frae that era wis independent, sel-released, sel-titled cassette which wis in later years buitleggit. It wis feenally offeecially re-released on Oracle Records in 1998 an titled Volume 1.
In 2004, Pagan Altar reunitit, re-recordit an released their previously unfeenished seicont album, Lords of Hypocrisy. These sangs date back tae the first 1980s incarnation. An aa in 2004, The Time Lord EP wis released, which contains recordins that date back tae the baund's inception in 1978.
Their third album, Mythical & Magical wis released in late 2006 an features a considerable amoont o material that an aa date back prior tae the 1982 release.
