The air haes heich concentrations o sulphuric acid fumes an the grund haes hunders o tons o toxic waste. The Uzbek govrenment haes resistit caws tae close the plant, arguin that the kintra's economy canna afford tae dae so: The plant employs aroond 25,000 residents o the ceety, an accoonts for a substantial share o the region's economy. Housomeivver, in January 2005 the govrenment annoonced plans tae clean up the aurie, wi a target o 2010.
