The first Greek naitional emblem wis providit for bi the Constitution of Epidauros on the 1st Januar 1822 an wis established bi decree on the 15t of Mairch of the same year. It wis the shape o a blue an white circular cockade.

The oreeginal Greek naitional emblem depictit the goddess Athena an the owl. At the time of Ioannis Capodistrias, the first Prime Meenister o modren Greece, the phoenix, the simbol of rebirth, wis addit. Durin the reign o the Bavarian Keeng Otto, the royal coat o airms, wis the crowned lions hauldin the shield of the royal crown, became the naitional emblem of the kintra. Wi the arrival o Keeng George I, the coat o arms wis replaced bi the Dens-inspired version. Efter Greece became a republic in 1924 the naitional emblem consisting o a simple white cross on a blue escutcheon. The royal arms returned wi the restoration of the monarchy in 1935 an wur uised till 1973, when the then-rulin military junta abolisht the monarchy. The current design, bi the airtist Kostas Grammatopoulos, wis adoptit on 7 Juin 1975, bi Law 48 (ΦΕΚ Α΄ 108/7.6.1975).
