Mitú is the caipital o the depairtment o Vaupés in Colombie.[2][3] It is a sma toun locatit in Sootheastren Colombie in the Amazon Basin. The toun servit as a meetin pynt atween different indigenous commonties, in addeetion o bein a centre o rubber tree exploitation, fur tred an missionar center. Its main activity wis the rubber tred for fuid, clothin an fuel. Efter bein for a time a tounship, in 1963 Mitú became the caipital o the Vaupés Commissar (Comisaria). In 1974, it wis made municipality an in 1991 it became the caipital o the new creatit depairtment.
In November, 1998 an estimatit 1,900[4] FARC guerrilla members o the Eastren Bloc o the FARC-EP treed tae tak ower the toun bi force, against 120 Naitional Polis members an ane Colombie Naitional Airmy Battalion. The Colombie Air Force an Airmy Aviation supportit grund forces wi air raids. Mitu wis left pairtially destroyed an some 60 polismen an 10 civilians dee'd alang wi ower 800 guerrilla members.[4] In thair escape FARC teuk hostages as human shields includin some 40 tae 45 members o the Colombie Militar.[5]
On 13 Juin 2010, twa o the hostages captured in Mitu in 1998, Naitional Polis Col. (nou Gen.) Luis Mendieta an Naitional Polis Col. Enrique Murillo wur freed bi the Colombie airmy in a rescue operation[6] that freed twa ithers captured in Miraflores tae the wast in 1998 an aw.
