eeditIn the 12t century the aurie o the day's destrict became the property o the earldom Berg. When Napoleon I occupeed the aurie in 1792 it became a canton in the arrondissement Düsseldorf.
Efter the Congress o Vienna the aurie went tae Proushie in 1816 as pairt o the province Westphalie, an the first destrict Mettmann wis creatit. This destrict wis mergit frae 1820 till 1861 wi the destrict Elberfeld, which then became a ceety in its awn richt, nou it's pairt o Wuppertal. In 1877 the admeenistrative seat wis muivit tae Vohwinkel. In 1929 mair o the aurie wis gien ower tae Wuppertal, an the destrict wis mergit wi the destrict Düsseldorf (Landkreis, excludin the ceety itsel), tae form the destrict Düsseldorf-Mettmann, wi admeenistrative seat in Düsseldorf. In 1952 the seat went back tae Mettmann, an efter the last reorganization o 1975/76 the destrict got back the auld name. The ceeties Langenfeld an Monheim wur includit intae the destrict then, while Kettwig became pairt o the ceety Essen.
