eedit

Kiiu (German: Kida) touer is a medieval defensive touer hoose o a teep foond an aw elsewhaur in the Easter region an sometimes referred tae as a "vassal castle". This teep o fortification wis no intendit tae be uised in ony major militar operations. Ither examples in Estonie include Vao touer an Purtse Castle.

Kiiu touer wis probably built aroond 1520 bi the local laird o the manor Fabian von Tiesenhausen. Oreeginally the touer wis surroondit bi a limestane waw an ootbiggins, formin a courtyard. The touer itsel is conical an fower storeys heich. Anerly the seicont storey wis intendit tae be uised as livin quairters in times o war or unrest. On this floor, a bed alcove is foond in the waw, as well as a fireplace an latrine which are present on the ither storeys an aw. Aw the ither storeys haed purely defensive purposes, includin embrasurs o 11 different shapes, an were connectit bi a spiral staircase runnin throu the thick waw. The reconstructit huirdin that surroonds the third storey is unique in Estonie.

The touer wis damagit durin the Livonie War an subsequently uised as an ootbiggin for the local manor hoose. In 1973 the touer wis restored unner the guidance o well-kent airt historian Villem Raam.[2][3]
