Großkreutz began his career wi the Dortmund clubs DJK Rot-Weiß Obereving, VfL Kemminghausen an FC Merkur 07. In 2002, he jyned Borussia Dortmund, whaur he played till he muivit tae Rot Weiss Ahlen. Promotit tae first team in 2006, he led the club tae promotion tae the 2. Bundesliga in 2008.

In Julie 2009, Großkreutz moved tae Borussia Dortmund.[2] He opened his accoont wi Dortmund on 5 December 2009 in a 4–0 victory ower 1. FC Nürnberg. Großkreutz made his full internaitional debut in a friendly match against Malta on 13 Mey 2010,[13] helpin set up striker Cacau for ane o his twa goals in a 3–0 win. He next appeared for Germany as a starter against Swaden in a 0–0 draw on 18 November 2010.[14]

In Juin 2014, he wis namit in Germany's squad for the 2014 FIFA Warld Cup.[15]
