In 1991, Pekka Kokko and Petri Sankala founded the metal band Ancestor. After Ancestor had recorded twa demos, Antti Kokko joined the baund as their lead guitarist. In 1998, efter five demos, Ancestor disbaundit. Later in the same year, Kalmah wis formit. The new baund consistit o Pekka Kokko performin vocals an guitar, Antti Kokko on lead guitar, Pasi Hiltula on keybuirds, Altti Veteläinen on bass, an Petri Sankala on drums.

Kalmah began tae write sangs for a promotional CD entitled Svieri Obraza. Wi this demo, they acquired a recordin contract wi Spinefarm Records an heidit tae Tico-Tico Studios tae record their debut album, Swamplord.

By November 2001, they returned tae Tico-Tico Studios tae record their seicont studio album, They Will Return. Bi this time, Veteläinen an Sankala wur replacit bi Timo Lehtinen on bass an Janne Kusmin on drums, respectively. In 2002, Kalmah played shows in Finland an at Wacken Open Air. In Februar 2003, they recordit their third studio album, Swampsong. In 2004, keybuirdist Pasi Hiltula left an wis replacit bi Marco Sneck. The baund released The Black Waltz in 2006 an For the Revolution in 2008. Kalmah toured in Canadae an Finland tae promote the latter album.
