The new ceety, Gibellina Nuova, wis rebuilt some 20 km distant frae the auld ane. The new ceety wis designed bi mony o the maist prominent airtists and architects in Italy, but done in a piecemeal fashion so that the pairts o the new ceety bear little relation tae ane anither or tae the indigenous airchitectur o Sicily.

Ruderi di Gibellina (as the ruins o the ceety are nou referred tae) remained juist as it wis efter the yirdquauk, practically a ghost toun. Airtist Alberto Burri covered the entirety o the ruins in concrete, while preservin the shape o the biggins an the streetscape. Additionally, Italian sculptor Pietro Consagra an Senator Ludovico Corrao formit an open air museum wi a Consagra sculptur "Porta del Belice" or "Door tae Belice" at the entrance. Consagra expressed a wish tae be buriet at Gibellina on his daithbed in Julie 2005.[2]
