Dickinson wis born in Amherst, Massachusetts intae a prominent faimily wi strong ties tae its commonty. Efter studyin at the Amherst Academy for seiven years in her youth, she briefly attendit the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary afore returnin tae her faimily's hoose in Amherst.

Dickinson leeved muckle o her life in reclusive isolation. Conseedert an eccentric bi locals, she developit a notit penchant for white cleidin an becam kent for her reluctance tae greet guests or, later in life, tae even leave her bedroom. Dickinson niver mairied, an maist freendships atween her an ithers dependit entirely upon correspondence. She wis a recluse for the later years o her life.[2]

While Dickinson wis a prolific preevat poet, fewer nor a dozen o her nearly 1,800 poems war published in her lifetime.[3] The wark that wis published in her lifetime wis uisually altered signeeficantly bi the publishers tae fit the conventional poetic rules o the time. Her poems are unique for the era in that she wrote; thay conteen short lines, teepically lack teetles, an eften uise slant rhyme as weel as unconventional caipitalisation an punctuation.[4] Mony o her poems deal wi themes o daith an immortality, twa recurrin tapics in letters tae her freends.

Awtho Dickinson's acquaintances war maist likely awaur o her writin, it wis nae till efter her daith in 1886—whan Lavinia, Dickinson's younger sister, diskivert her cache o poems—that the breidth o her wark becam apparent tae the public. Her first collection o poetry wis published in 1890 bi personal acquaintances Thomas Wentworth Higginson an Mabel Loomis Todd, tho baith hivily eeditit the content. A complete, an maistly unaltered, collection o her poetry becam available for the first time whan scholart Thomas H. Johnson published The Poems of Emily Dickinson in 1955.
