Edward Theodore Salvesen
The Hon. Edward Theodore Salvesen, Lord Salvesen PC QC FRSE (20 Julie 1857 – 23 Februar 1942) wis a Scots lawer, politeecian an juidge wha rose tae be a Senator o the College o Juistice.[1]
Life eedit
Edward Theodore Salvesen wis the son o Christian Frederik Salvesen (1827–1911), the Norse-born foonder o the Christian Salvesen shipping line o Leith. He wis born at 20 Charlotte Street in Leith, whaur his faither lived an wrocht in his early days in Scotland.[2] The faimily muived tae Catherine Bank House on Newhaven Road as his faither's fortuins increased.[3]
Salvesen studied law at the Varsity o Edinburgh, an wis cawed tae the Scots Bar in 1880, becoming a Queen's Coonsel in 1899. He wis an unsuccessful Leeberal Unionist pairlamentary candidate for Leith Burghs in 1900, an for Bute in 1905.[4]
Salvesen's Edinburgh residence wis at 40 Drumsheugh Gardens, a lairge tounhoose.[5]
He wis appyntit Shirra o Roxburgh, Berwick an Selkirk in November 1901,[6][7] serving as such until early 1905. He held office o Solicitor General for Scotland frae February–October 1905.
In late 1905 he wis appyntit a juidge o the Coort o Session, a post he held until 1922. He wis awso created a Senator of the College of Justice an adoptit the title o Lord Salvesen. He wis apyintit a Privy Coonsellor in 1922 an wis awso a member o the Judicial Commeettee o the Privy Cooncil.
He wis the Lord Rector's Assessor on the Coorts o the Varsity o Edinburgh frae 1929–33, President o the Ryal Zoological Society o Scotland, Chairman o the Ryal Scots Association, Fellow o the Ryal Society o Edinburgh, an President o the Ryal Scots Geographical Society frae 1920–26. He wis a Commander o the Order o the White Rose o Finland an Order o St. Olav o Norawa.[8]
He is buried in the 20th-century extension tae Dean Seemetry in Edinburgh gainst the northmaist wa. The bronzes (incluidin a portrait heid) are bi Henry Snell Gamley.

He married Isabelle Georgine Maxwell Trayner (1865-1939) dochter o John Trayner, Lord Trayner.[9]
Risøbank Manor eedit
Edward T. Salvesen built his holiday home Risøbank Manor in Mandal, in the o o Vest-Agder, Norawa. His faither, Christian Salvesen, haed acquired the haudin in 1862. The manor biggin wis designt bi the Scots airchitect Robert Lorimer an wis feenished in 1901. It wis acquired bi the govrenment an the local authors in 1971. Mandal municipality is responsible for mainteenance o the biggins. In 1977 it feenished a major refurbishment o Risøbank. The estate is nou pairt o the Furulunden Nature Park.[10]
