The name comes frae the Burgundians, an auncient Germanic fowk who settled in the aurie in early Middle-age. The region o Burgundy is baith larger than the auld Duchy o Burgundy an smawer than the aurie ruled bi the Dukes o Burgundy, frae the modren Netherlands tae the border o Auvergne. It is made up o the follaein auld provinces:
- Burgundy: Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire, an soothren hauf o Yonne. This corresponds tae the auld duchy o Burgundy (later cried province o Burgundy). Housomeivver, the auld coonty o Burgundy (later cried province o Franche-Comté) is no includit inside the Burgundy region, but it maks up the Franche-Comté region. An aw, a sma pairt o the duchy o Burgundy (province o Burgundy) is nou inside the Champagne-Ardenne region.
- Nivernais: nou the Nièvre depairtment
- the northren hauf o Yonne is a territory that wis no pairt o Burgundy (at least no syne the 11t century), an wis a frontier atween Champagne, Île-de-France, an Orléanais, dependin frae each o these provinces at different times in history.
The climate o this region is essentially oceanic (Cfb in Köppen classification), wi a continental influence (sometimes cried a "hauf-continental climate").
