Bueng Kum wis separatit frae Bang Kapi on 4 September 1989 consistin o 3 sub-destricts: Khlong Kum, Khan Na Yao, an Saphan Sung. On 14 October 1997, Khan Na Yao an Saphan Sung's wur elevatit tae destricts, leavin Bueng Kum wi sole sub-destrict: Khlong Kum.

Bueng Kum wis namit so acause o a loch (Bueng means loch) uised as watter reservoir for flood prevention. Thare are plants cried Kum (Crataeva sp.) aroond the loch an aw. The loch is pairt o Seri Thai Park.
