In 1971 the Ceety o Borås is made a municipality (kommun) when the unitary type o local govrenment unit wis introducit in Swaden. Three year later a lot o surroondin municipalities wur amalgamatit wi Borås. In 1995 the wastren pairt wis split aff, creatin Bollebygd Municipality.

In the 1990s the municipal assembly (kommunfullmäktige) decidit tae uise the name Borås stad or Ceety o Borås wheniver possible, for the whole municipality, includin rural auries. This decision is purely nominal an haes nae effect on the legal status o the municipality.
