The green an reid colors appear in this banner acause thay hae been veneratit historically bi the Turkmen. The waxin crescent moon symbolizes the hope o the kintra for a shinin future an the stars represent the five provinces (welayatlar) o Turkmenistan – Ahal, Balkan, Dashhowuz, Lebap, an Mary.
The five traditional cairpet designs alang the hoist represent the five major tribes or hooses, an form motifs in the kintra's state emblem an banner. These Turkmen tribes in traditional order (as well as tap tae bottom) are Teke (Tekke), Yomut (Yomud), Arsary (Ersary), Chowdur (Choudur), an Saryk (Saryq). In 1997, the designs changed again afore becomin the current versions in 2001.
