Banner o Turkmenistan

The banner o Turkmenistan (Turkmen: Türkmenistanyň baýdagy) wis adoptit on Januar 24, 2001.

It features a green field wi a vertical reid stripe near the hoist side, containin five cairpet guls (designs uised in producin rugs) stackt abuin twa crossed olive branches seemilar tae those on the banner o the Unitit Naitions; a white waxin crescent moon, teepical o Turkic seembology, an five white five-pointit stars appear in the upper corner o the field juist tae the flee side o the reid stripe.

The green an reid colors appear in this banner acause thay hae been veneratit historically bi the Turkmen. The waxin crescent moon symbolizes the hope o the kintra for a shinin future an the stars represent the five provinces (welayatlar) o Turkmenistan – Ahal, Balkan, Dashhowuz, Lebap, an Mary.

The five traditional cairpet designs alang the hoist represent the five major tribes or hooses, an form motifs in the kintra's state emblem an banner. These Turkmen tribes in traditional order (as well as tap tae bottom) are Teke (Tekke), Yomut (Yomud), Arsary (Ersary), Chowdur (Choudur), an Saryk (Saryq). The Salyr (Salor), a tribe that declined as a result o military defeat afore the modren period, are no representit, nor are several smawer tribes or subtribes.

Efter independence in 1991, Turkmenistan adoptit a flag vera seemilar tae the current design, on Februar 19, 1992. Houever, the designs on the left wur different. In 1997, the designs changed again afore becomin the current versions in 2001.
