Banja Loka
Banja Loka (pronounced [ˈbaːnja ˈloːka]; umwhile an aw Banjaloka[2][3]) is a smaw veelage in the Municipality o Kostel in soothren Slovenie. The aurie is pairt o the tradeetional region o Lawer Carniola an is nou includit in the Sootheast Slovenie statistical region.[4]

Banja Loka wis attestit in written sources in 1763–87 as Bainloka. The first part of the name mey be derivit frae the personal name Ban or frae the obsolete common noun ban 'ryal representative', an loka refers tae a law-lyin meadae. The name tharefore means either 'Ban's meadae' or 'ryal representative's meadae'.[5] Locally, the dounset is kent as Banoka,[5][6] Banloka,[6] or Banjloka.[2] The name o the veelage wis offeecially chyngit frae Banjaloka tae Banja Loka in 2000.[3]

The local pairish kirk, biggit tae the east o the dounset next tae the cemetery, is dedicatit tae Saunt James (Slovene: sveti Jakob) an belangs tae the Roman Catholic Diocese o Novo Mesto. It wis biggit in 1742 an haes a cruciform floor plan wi a lairge belfry.[7]
