The ceety gained Roman suffrage in 188 BC an the status o a municipium in 90 BC. Baith Gaius Marius an Cicero wur natives o Arpinum. Thare is a oral tradeetion that persists tae this day that Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa wis a native o Arpinum an aw. Historians hae no been able tae confirm his oreegin.
In the early Middle Ages, its strategic position haed it contendit atween the Roman duchy and the Duchy o Benevento. Efter the 11t hunderyear it wis ruled bi the Normans, the Hohenstaufen an bi the Papal States. It wis destroyed twice; in 1229 bi Frederick II an in 1242 bi Conrad IV.
