Frae 1969 tae 2004 it belonged, alang wi the neebourheid o Cenarruza (Ziortza in Basque), tae the municipality o Markina-Xemein, till a commonty muivement managit tae merge baith neebourheids intae a unthirlt municipality.

The last name Bolívar haes its oreegins in this locality; Simón Bolívar de la Rementería, a colonist born in this neebourhei, teuk it frae Europe tae the Americae, whaur his famous stryndant Simón Bolívar, ane o the Liberators o Americae made it famous aroond the warld. The Collegiate Kirk o Cenarruza or Ziortza is locatit roughly twa kilometers frae the urban nucleus. It wis a important enclave in the Route o Santiago de Compostela, an its influence extendit ayont the comarca an surpassed the releegious scope.

Accordin tae legend, on the day o the Assumption in the year 968 the local indwallers held a mass in the Kirk o Santa Lucia de Garay, when a eagle pickit up a skull frae a opened tomb an droppit it in the place whaur the Collegiate Kirk is situatit the day. The fowk unnerstuid this event tae be a sign an raised the releegious complex in that place.

The complex consists o:

  • The kirk, oreeginally biggit in the 14t hunderyear but continually rebuilt until it obtained, in the 15t hunderyear, the Gothic style it currently haes. In its interior thare is a magnificent organ, ane o the maist auncient in Biscay, an a lairge group o sculpturs. The portico haes curious carvins in its beams, an the front door haes a group o sculpturs representin Jesus Christ an twa muisicker angels.
