History eedit

Muffat Academy traces its history tae tha local grammar schuil foondit in 1639 bi Dr Johnstone. During tha 1810s, tha schuil entert a low period as there were suspicions that the funds endowed by Johnstone's estate were misused.[1] It then merged wi a local pairish schuil in 1834 and named "Muffat Academy". Until tha construction o new premises beginnin in 2007, the school wis hoosed on tha same site fur ower 150 years. In 1988, fifth and sixth year classes were added, meanin pupils could noo attend tha school a tha way tae age 18. Prior tae this, students stayin on efter fourth year had tae travel sooth tae Lockerbie Academy tae complete fifth and sixth years. The academy shiftit tae its new premises in 2010. [2]

On tha 4th o Mairch, 2024, First Meenister Humza Yousaf and tha Cabinet Secretary fur Education and Skills Jenny Gilruth visited the academy tae launch a new framework tae attempt tae combat gender-based violence in Scottish schuils. Whilk he wis there, Yousaf spoke tae pupils on topics ranging frae gender-based violence tae misogyny, and wis gien a toor o tha schuil bi heid teacher Tara Woods. Efter tha visit, Yousaf said "I had heard a lot about the ethos and culture that’s being promoted within the school but I wanted to see it first hand and I’ve been blown away. It exceeded my expectations genuinely, just how incredibly inclusive an environment they have here at Moffat Academy." [3]
