Athin the municipality o Monachil thare are three distinct population centres: the auld veelage, aften referred tae as Monachil Pueblo, the newer Barrio de la Vega an Pradollano, the resort veelage at the Sierra Nevada Ski Station. The ski station hostit the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996, an is due tae hauld the 2015 Winter Universiade.

The name Monachil comes frae the Arabic منستير (monastir), a wird o Laitin oreegin meanin "monastery".[1]
