Construction o the dam began in 1945 an wis completit in 1953, when Azerbaijan wis still a republic within the Soviet Union as the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. It wis commissioned in 1954. It wis reconstructed in 2000 an has 6 x 70 MW Francis-teep hydropouer turbine electric generators.[1]
