It is boondit bi the pairishes o Dumfries til the sooth, Halywuid an Dunscore til the wast, an Kirkmichael an Tynwald til the east.[1]

The name Kirkmahoe commemorates Saunt Kentigern (kent as Saunt Mungo an aw), the patron saunt o Glesga.[2] The name Mo Choe is the Scots Gaelic equvalent o Mungo, the Cumbric diminutive form o Kentigern.[3]
