Iizuka wis a important post-station on the Nagasaki Kaidō durin the Edo Era. As Japan industrialisit, Iizuka became the centre o the maist productive coal fields in Japan locatit throuoot the surroondin Chikuho destrict. Efter the end o Warld War II thare wis a lairge influx o fowk intae the ceety as it wis ane o the few auries that affered a lairge nummer o jobs in the coal mines an relatit fields.

Syne the coal mines closed, Iizuka Ceety has suffered frae a consistently declinin population base. Housomeivver, its proximity tae baith Fukuoka Ceety an Kitakyushu Ceety cushioned the effect o the coal industry shutdoun an kept the local economy frae goin intae freefall. As o 2008, the ceety haes an estimatit population o 132,208 an a population density o 617 bodies per km². The total aurie is 214.13 km².

On 26 Mairch 2006, Iizuka absorbit the touns o Chikuho, Honami, Kaita an Shōnai (aw frae Kaho Destrict) tae create the new an expandit ceety o Iizuka.
