English: 1603 National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels - San Miguel Church (Simbahan ng San Miguel) - Saints Michael and the Archangels Pro-Cathedral Parish and National Shrine [1](Malacañang Church)[2]Coordinates: 14°35'31"N 120°59'30"E Malacañang Grounds[3] Malacañang Palace[4] [5] San Miguel Church was constructed in 1630s as an act of gratitude by a Spanish governor-general who had miraculously escaped death on a military campaign. The church also ministered to Japanese Christians fleeing persecution under the Tokugawa Shogunate, and since many of these exiles belonged to the samurai, or the warrior class, the church was dedicated to Saint Michael. The present church, notable for the beautiful symmetry of its twin bell towers, followed the model of European Baroque architecture. The fitting climax to the historical significance of San Miguel Church came with its inauguration and consecration as the National Shrine of the Archangels on February 22, 1986, the night when EDSA I began. In attendance were His Eminence, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal of the Archdiocese of Cebu and His Excellency, Bruno Torpigliani, the Papal Nuncio. Henceforth, a weekly novena to the Archangels are celebrated every Monday at the Shrine. On October 1, 1989, Msgr. Marcelino A. Montemayor took the helm as Rector and Pastor of the National Shrine.[6]Established in 1630, San Miguel Church is notable for its European Baroque architecture with the beautiful symmetry of its bell towers. The church holds the National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels. First established as an act of gratitude, San Miguel Church was dedicated to Saint Michael, who is the patron saint of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police and sickness, because it administered to samurais or warriors who were escaping persecution under the Tokugawa Shogunate. The church is also known as Malacañang Church because of its close proxinity to the Palace. Location: 1000 J.P. Laurel corner Gen.
