Object history
Deutsch: Zell war der Hauptort einer Vogtei gleichen Namens. Die Grundherrschaft hatten bis 1847 die Freiherren von Schönau inne, bis 1806 unter österreichischer, danach unter badischer Landesherrschaft. 1810 wurde Zell zur Stadt erhoben. Schon das Siegel der Vogtei Zell aus dem 17. Jahrhundert enthält den österreichischen Bindenschild mit dem Oberwappen der Familie von Schönau (Spangenhelm, Helmdecken und zwei rechtsgewendete Schwanenhälse als Helmzier). Im ab 1811 belegten ältesten Stadtsiegel wird dieses Wappen weiterverwendet. Der Balken ist nun mit Wellenlinien versehen; die Schwanenköpfe halten zusätzlich die drei Ringe aus dem Schönauer Wappen im Schnabel. Seit 1975 wird das Stadtwappen in den Siegeln ohne Oberwappen geführt. Die die Lage der Gemeinde an der Großen Wiese symbolisierenden Wellenlinien im Balken sind heute, heraldisch besser, durch Wellenfäden ersetzt.
