Washboo's suggestions - anything to take up?

eedit

The following suggestions to improve grammar in the Dumfries article have been proposed for the Dumfries entry by Washboo in a comment around February 2024 on the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8wfSpSAASQ. I'm not a Scots speaker, but Washboo claims to be one. Could you please independently evaluate these suggestions?

'Native scots speaker here. Out of curiosity I checked Dumfries' (a town unknown outside Scotland) Scots Wikipedia page and it's got all the issues. Category: "Folk frae Dumfries" should be: "Folk fae Dumfries" "Mercat toun an foregane ryal burgh within the Dumfries an Gallowa cooncil area o Scotland" (Market town and foregone royal burgh inside the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland (?)) should be "Mairket toon an former burgh in Dumfries an Galloway, Scotlan." (Market town and former burgh in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.) "No positive history his been obteent o the era an the circumstances that the toun of Dumfries wis foondit in." (No positive history has been obtained of the era and the circumstances that the town of Dumfries was founded in.) should be "Naebody kens fir sure when an why the toon wis foundit or whae foundit it." (Nobody knows for sure when and why the town was founded or who founded it) Note: my scots spelling is shite.'

END OF WASHBOO'S COMMENT. SOME OF MY OBSERVATIONS FOLLOW: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/frae says "frae" is in fact an acceptable usage in Scotland and users in https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/16l72yh/where_you_faeorigins/ and the page https://www.dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/fae_prep say "fae" is only in certain Scots dialects. It seems Washboo might be wrong about the spelling of "mairket" because the existing spelling "mercat" seems okay according to reliable sources. "Kens fir sure" appears to be a good phrase to use but on another Scots Wikipedia page the spelling is "kens for shuir". 2600:1000:B12D:AEFC:D74A:DA02:C9CA:347C (talk) 13:22, 27 Julie 2024 (UTC)Reply
