The toun o Artés is locatit at the centre o Catalonie, at the eastren edge o the plain zone o Bages -commonly kent as Pla de Bages. The toun is in the basin o the Gavarresa river an o its affluent, the stream o Malrubí.
It is bordered on the north bi the touns o Sallent an Avinyó, in the sooth bi Calders an it shares a smaw mairch in the wast wi Navarcles, on the leemit o the Llobregat river.
The toun is near the Artés Formation, a unique geological formation that awes its name tae its proximity wi the toun.

Little evidence o the prehistory o Artés haes been discovered tae date. Housomeivver, a document frae the year 938 indicates the presence o three dolmens; an abundant samples o Iberie pottery hae been foond in the valley o Salabernada.
The aircheological remains o the Clessical Period are numerous an confirm the existence o conteenous dounset for seiven hunderyears. In pairticular, aircheological fynds hae been made at Matacans, whaur thare uised tae be a Roman villa, an at the Plaça Vella (Auld Square) whaur three Roman inscriptions o the 2nt an 3rd centuries, ane necropolis an a auncient Paleochristian Kirk -that can be datit atween 6t an 7t hunderyears- wur foond.
The name o Artés is ane o the first documentit names o aw the touns in Bages. Specifically, a grant datit on the 24t Juin 889, bi which the King Odó gae tae the Kirk o Sant Pere de Vic several guids an richts; amang thaim de Valley o Artés.
