This municipality wis shapit in 1958 bi the union o the municipalities of Apellániz, Arraya an Laminoria. It wis oreeginally cried Maestu, but in 1987 adoptit its current name.
The municipality is componit o 16 veelages, dividit intae 10 cooncils:
- Apellániz (offeecially Apellániz/Apinaiz)
- Atauri
- Azáceta (offeecially Azazeta)
- Corres (offeecially Korres)
- Maestu (offeecially Maeztu/Maestu), which is the caipital o the municipality.
- Onraita (offeecially Onraita/Erroeta)
