Amaterasu (天照), Amaterasu-ōmikami (天照大神/天照大御神/天照皇大神) or Ōhirume-no-muchi-no-kami (大日孁貴神) is a pairt o the Japanese meeth cycle, an aa a major deity o the Shinto releegion. She is seen as the goddess o the sun, but an aa o the universe. The name Amaterasu derived frae Amateru means "shinin in heiven." The meanin o her whole name, Amaterasu-ōmikami, is "the great august kami (god) who shines in the heaven".[N 1] Accordin tae the Kojiki an Nihon Shoki in Japanese meethologie, the Emperors o Japan are conseedert tae be direct descendants o Amaterasu.

  1. ama means "heiven"; tera is an inflectional form o teru, "tae shine"; su is an honoreefic auxiliary verb which shaws respect for the actor; then amaterasu means "taea shine in the heiven". An ō means "big" or "great"; mi is a prefix for noble an august beins.[1]
