The toun is locatit in the sooth-wast corner o the province, sooth-wast o San Antonio de los Baños an wast o Güira de Melena.
The settlement wis first mentioned in 1616, as a coffee plantation awned bi Don Sancho de Alquízar, who gives the name o the commonty. In 1826, a garrison wis established here,[1] an it wis incorporatit in 1879.
