The palace, which also served as a Franciscan friary, wis built during the reign o Keeng John V o Portugal , as consequence of a vow the keeng made in 1711, tae construct a convent if his wife, Queen Mariana, gave him offspring. The birth o his first daughter the Infanta Bárbara o Portugal, prompted construction o the palace tae begin. The pailace wis conveniently located near ryal hunting preserves, an wis usually a secondary residence for the ryal faimily.
