He wis a member o the Hoose o Orléans, itself descended frae the ruling Bourbons o Fraunce. Louis Philippe's faither haed the rank o a Prince o the bluid at court as did Louis Philippe. This entitled them tae the style o address o "Serene Highness".

Finally, in December 1772, the King gae his consent on the condeetion that the Marquise o Montesson wad never acome Duchess o Orléans or succeed tae ony ither Orléans titles. In addition, the couple wis tae live a quiet life away frae the cort. The morganatic wedding teuk place on 23 Aprile 1773.
