Current polis forces hae thair grundin in the Police Act 1996 (in Ingland an Wales), a combination o Police (Scotland) Act 1967 an Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012 (in Scotland) an the Polis (Northren Ireland) Act 2000 (in Northren Ireland), which prescribe a nummer o issues such as appyntment o a Chief Constable, jurisdiction an responsibilities.
- Special polis forces, which are naitional polis forces that hae a specific, non-regional jurisdiction, such as the Breetish Transport Police. The Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 refers tae these as 'special polis forces'.
- Non-polis law enforcement agencies, whose officers are nae police officers, but still enforce laws.
