José Gabriel de Silva-Bazán y Waldstein, 10t Marquis o Santa Cruz de Mudela (18 Mairch 1782 – 4 November 1839), wis a Spaingie noble, first Director o the Prado Museum atween 1817 an 1820 an Mayordomo mayor atween 1822 an 1823. He wis also a Grandee o Spain.
He wis a descendant o Álvaro de Bazán, 1st Marquis o Santa Cruz, as auldest son o José Joaquín de Silva-Bazán (1734–1802), 9t Marquis o Santa Cruz an his seicont Austrick wife Mariana de Waldstein (1763–1807).
He wis a senator, a Knight in the Order o the Gowden Fleece (1821), the Order o Calatrava and the Order o Carlos III.
He wis also Gentilhombre, Mayordomo mayor and Sumiller de Corps of Ferdinand VII, member of the Regency Council during the childhood o Isabella II o Spain, Ambassador in París, special envoy tae London for the coronation o George IV, and director o the Real Academia Española. He was even Prime Minister o Spain for 6 days in Januar 1822.
In 1817, he became the first Director o the Prado Museum. Before the Peninsular War, his faither had already convinced King Charles IV not to burn the obscene paintings in the Royal collection, as wis the wish of the previous Keeng Carlos III, but to store them in a private gallery. After the War, under impulse o Queen Maria Isabel o Portugal, the Museum wis created with José Gabriel de Silva-Bazán as its first Director.
He wis replaced as Director bi his brither-in-law Pedro de Alcántara Téllez-Girón, after the outbreak o the Liberal Triennium, but in the uncertain times following the daith o Keeng Ferdinand VII o Spain, he collaborated with the new Director José Rafael de Silva Fernández de Híjar tae keep the museum's collection thegither.
