He wis a son o Ernst II, Duke o Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg an Charlotte de Saxe-Meiningen.
Efter the daith o his aulder brither August without sons (1822), Frederick (the anly surviving male o the house) inheritit the duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg.
Frederick fought - efter militar training - in the Napoleonic campaigns an wis heavily wounded. As a consequence o these injuries, he wis constantly ill until his daith. Because o his illness, he traveled for a long time seeking a cure. During these stays outside o his duchy, he left the government in hands o his secret advisor Bernhard August von Lindenau.
He anly reigned three years an died unmairit; with him, the line o Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg ended. Efter his daith, his lands were repartitioned among his Wettin relations. Ernst I o Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld received Gotha, an changed his teetle tae Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, although the two duchies remained technically separate in a personal union. Altenburg wis thereafter ruled by the Duke o Saxe-Hildburghausen, whose dukedom wis transferred to Saxe-Meiningen along with Saxe-Saalfeld, which Saxe-Coburg gave up in return for receiving Saxe-Gotha.
