Die Dame blättert in der Partitur der Oper "Armide" von Jean-Baptiste Lully. Sie hat die Arie der Armide aus der ersten Szene des ersten Aktes aufgeschlagen. Die Arie verweist auf die über Leben und Tod bestimmende Liebe und auf den Sieg der Gefühle über die Vernunft. Möglicherweise enthält diese Deutung einen Hinweis auf den mit 33 Jahren früh verstorbenen Gemahl der Dargestellten, der zum Entstehungszeitpunkt des Bildes nicht mehr lebte. Nattier war ein gesuchter Maler und Porträtist des französischen Hochadels am Hof Ludwigs XV. Das Gemälde wurde nach der Revolution von 1789 beschlagnahmt und kam 1803 mit weiteren Bildern als Staatsgeschenk nach Mainz. [2] [3]
