Cytochromes are heme-conteenin proteins. Three varieties are recognised, cytochromes a, cytochromes b, an cytochromes c. Thay differ wi respect tae the substituents on the periphery o the heme. Cytochromes function as electron relays, exploitin the switchin o the airn centres frae ferrous (Fe(II)) tae ferric (Fe(III)).[1]
