August, Duke o Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (Emil Leopold August) (23 November 1772 — 17 Mey 1822), was a Duke o Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, and the author o an o the first same-sex luv stories. He wis the maternal grandfaither o Prince Albert, consort o Queen Victoria. August wis kent as a patron an collector o art, but haed an aversion tae hunting or riding. Carl Maria von Weber (whose debts he paid) dedicated his 2nd piano concerto to him out of gratitude. He was also seen as an eccentric, with a penchant for shocking or provocative appearances. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe described him as "pleasant and distasteful at the same time" an noted: "I can not complain about him, but it was always a nervous matter accepting an invitation tae his table, as one could not predict which of the guests o honour he might decide on a whim tae treat mercilessly". His tendency towards transvestism is characteristic: he liked tae appear in weemen's clothing an thereby shock the coort o Gotha. The well-kent painter Caroline Louise Seidler, who was at the court of Gotha in the winter o 1811 to paint the Duke's faimily, described him as the "greatest original o his time," whose appearance had something "leddy-like" about it. He also haed a preference for dancing, wearing silk socks an feminine clothes. He called himsel "Emilie" among his friends. There are references tae a possible homosexuality in his literary works. In 1805 he published anonymously the poetic novel Ein Jahr in Arkadien: Kyllenion (i.e. A Year in Arcadia: Kyllenion). This is a pastoral idyll, set in ancient Greece, in which several couples fall in luv, overcome various obstacles an live happily ever after. It is unique in that ane o the couples is homosexual an their luv affair is treated nae differently frae that o any o the others. This is aiblins the first novel since antiquity in which same-sex luv is so treated. A man o great culture, August wis also in correspondence with Jean Paul, Madame de Stäel an Bettina von Arnim. He wis succeedit bi his brither Friedrich
