Antoine Crozat, Marquis o Châtel

Antoine Crozat, Marquis o Châtel (circa 1655 – 7 Juin 1738) wis a French foonder o an immense fortune, wis the first proprietary owner o French Louisiana, frae 1712 tae 1717. In 1708 Antoine Crozat built a notable hôtel particulier on the Place Vendôme tae the designs o the architect Pierre Bullet. It became part o the Hôtel Ritz Paris in 1910. Louis de Rouvroy, Duke o Saint-Simon described him as the richest man in aw Fraunce in the ring o Louis XIV. he later owned the Hôtel de Crozat in Paris, which wis later the property o Duke o Choiseul, afore it wis demolished in 1780.

Maist now hang in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, although a few were sold in the 1920s an 1930s bi the Soviet authorities for hard currency, including a dozen purchased bi Andrew Mellon, now in the National Gallery o Airt in Washington, DC.
