Abbeycwmhir or Abbey Cwmhir (Welsh: Abaty Cwm Hir, "Abbey in the Lang Valley") is a veelage in the valley o the Clywedog breuk in Powys, Wales.

The Abbey

The veelage is named efter Cwmhir Abbey, the Cistercian abbey biggit thare in 1143. It wis the lairgest Abbey in Wales but wis niver completit. Its fowerteen bay nave wis langer than Canterbury an Salisbury Cathedral naves an twice as lang as that at St. Davids. It wis a dochter hoose o Whitland Abbey, an constructit at the behest o three sons o Madog, the then Prince o soothren Powys. The first community at Dyvanner (Welsh: Ty faenor, "Manor Hoose") failed acause o the intervention o Hugh de Mortimer, Earl o Hereford but in 1176 the Rhys ap Gruffydd o Deheubarth re-established the Abbey on land gien bi Cadwallon ap Madog. Llewelyn ap Gruffydd is buried near the altar in the nave. The abbey wis burned bi the forces o Owain Glyndwr in 1401. At the Dissolution o the Monasteries in Mairch 1537 anerlie 3 monks lived in the abbey.[2]
The Abbey wis slichtit in 1644, durin the Inglis Ceevil War, awtho some ruins still remain. Thare is a memorial stane tae Llywelyn the Last, the last native Prince o Wales o direct strynd, whose body is buried thare.[2]

eedit- The veelage kirk o St Mary wis rebuilt in the neo-Byzantine style bi Mary Beatrice Philips in 1866. She wis a grand dochter o Francis Philips who purchased the Abbeycwmhir estate in 1837 wi money frae the cotton-tred. It replaced a kirk biggit in 1680. Suin efter the Victorian kirk wis biggit, the Rev. Francis Kilvert visitit.
- The Happy Union Inn is a grade II leetit biggin. The age o the biggin is something o a mystery thegither wi its name an unuisual pub sign. The present awner is the 3rd generation o his faimily tae run the pub.
- Abbey Cwmhir Hall: an Elizabethan-style hoose biggit in 1833 bi Thomas Wilson, then awner o the Abbeycwmhir estate. It replaced a smawer Tudor-style hoose. It is open tae the public.[3]
