Zagora, Morocco

Zagora (Arabic: زكورة‎) is a toun in the valley o the Draa River in Souss-Massa-Draâ, sootheastren Morocco. It is locatit at aroond 30°19′50″N 5°50′17″W / 30.33056°N 5.83806°W / 30.33056; -5.83806. It is flanked bi the muntain Zagora frae which the toun got its name. Originally it wis cawed 'Tazagourt' (ⵜⴰⵣⴰⴳⵓⵔⵜ) the singular o plural 'Tizigirt' (ⵜⵉⵣⵉⴳⵉⵔⵜ), Berber for 'twinpeaks', referrin tae the form o the mountain. In auld European maps the mountain Zagora is already indicatit but the toun itself wis ae built in the 20t century. On the top o the Zagora mountain the remains o an Almoravid fortress can still be seen.[1] The exact location o the umwhile Almoravid mosque is still a matter o dispute. Each year the moussem (festival) o the Sufi saunt moulay Abdelkader Jilali is celebratit at Zagora.

A weel kent sign at the toun border states "Tombouctou 52 jours", the supposed time it takes tae get tae Timbuktu, Mali on foot or camel.
