History eedit

The toun wis foondit as a posad near the monastery in the 16t century an suin developit intae an important tradin post.[2] Durin the reign o Ivan the Terrible, Pechory wis an important mairch stranghauld. It wis besiegit numerous times bi Roushie's enemies: Stefan Batory's forces sacked the dounset durin the Siege o Pskov in 1581, an the Swades or Pols stormit Pechory in 1592, 1611, 1615, an 1630, an frae 1655 tae 1657.

Efter the Great Northren War endit, Roushies rebuilt the fortifications an Boris Sheremetev began his campaign o 1701 in Pechory. In the course o the admeenistrative reform carriet oot in 1708 bi Peter the Great, the aurie wis includit intae Ingermanland Governorate (kent syne 1710 as Saunt Petersburg Govrenorate). In 1727, separate Novgorod Govrenorate wis split aff, an in 1772, Pskov Govrenorate wis establisht. (Atween 1777 an 1796, it existit as Pskov Viceryalty). In 1776, Pechory wis grantit toun status, an Pechorsky Uyezd wis established, but in 1797, Pechorsky Uyezd wis abolisht, an the aurie wis made a pairt o Pskovsky Uyezd o Pskov Govrenorate.[10]

In 1918, the dounset, which haed been in oblivion for centuries, regained its status as a toun. Frae Februar tae Dizember 1918, Pechory wis occupee'd bi the Germans. Durin the Estonie War o Unthirldom, the toun wis occupee'd bi the Estonie airmy on 29 Mairch 1919. Unner the terms o the Tartu Peace Treaty, Pechory an the territory aroond it, cried Setomaa, wur gien tae Estonie.

Durin the years atween the First an the Seicont warld wars, Petseri, as it wis cried at that time, wis the centre o Petserimaa (Petseri Coonty), ane o the eleiven coonties that made up the Republic o Estonie. Unner Estonie rule, the toun population grew bi mair nor 2.5 times, predominantly due tae arrival o ethnic Estonies. In Mey 1925, maist o the laund awned bi Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery wis confiscatit bi Estonie govrenment. St. Peter's Lutheran Kirk wis biggit in 1926. Durin Warld War II the toun wis occupeed bi the German Airmy frae August 1941 till 11 August 1944.

In 1944, efter Estonie wis occupee'd bi the Soviet Union, Pechory an maist o Petseri coonty wur transferred tae Pskov Oblast o the Roushie SFSR. In 1956, Pechory Seicontar Schuil No. 2 wis opened for Estonie-speakin pupils.

Efter Estonie unthirldom wis re-establisht in 1991, the toun, an the territory aroond it wur claimit for Estonie acause o the Tartu Peace Treaty, in which the Soviet Union haed relinquished further claims on Estonie territory.[11] In November 1995, a report said that Estonie haed droppit this claim.[12] A newer Estonie-Roushie Border Treaty wis signed bi Estonie on 18 Mey 2005, reflectin the later mairch chynges,[13] but wis rejectit an cancelled bi Roushie on 27 Juin 2005, acause o references tae Soviet occupation wur addit.[14][15]
