History eedit

A lairge cemetery datin tae the 8t century BC wis foond near Jabalia. The wirkmanship indicates that the Christian community in Gaza wis still vera hintle in existence in the early Islamic era o rule in Palestine, an capable o airtistic achievements. The remains o the pavement spared bi the iconoclasts shaw depictions o wild gemme, birds an kintra scenes. The late datin o the mosaic pavement proves that the intervention o the iconoclasts, efter 750, is later than previously thocht an is associatit wi Abbasid conservatives.[3]

While wirkin on the Salah ad-Din Road, laborers accidentally uncovered a monastery frae the Byzantine period. The steid wis excavatit bi the Palestinian Depairtment o Antiquities. Nou the stunnin Byzantine mosaics o the monastery are covered wi saund tae shield them frae erosion caused bi the direct impact o the winter rain.[4]

Jabalia wis kent for its fertile soil an citrus trees. The Mamluk ruler Alam al-Din Sanjar al-Jawli ruled the aurie in the 14t century an donatit land for the Omeri Mosque that anchors the veelage. Nae structures frae the auncient pairt o the mosque remain, except the portico an minaret. The rest o the mosque is o modren construction. The portico consists o three arcades supportit bi fower stane columns. The arcades hae pointit airches an the portico is covered bi crossin vaults.[5]

In late 2006 it wis the scene o a mass protest against Israeli attacks when a lairge nummer o fowk formed a human shield tae pertect a hoose which wis aboot tae be demolished bi Israeli forces.[6]

Residents celebratit in the streets efter prayers, urged on bi the imam ower the loudspeakers o the mosque, when news came o the August 2010 Wast Bank shuitin.[7]

Demographics eedit

Jabalia haes a heicher than average rate o male pseudohermaphrodite births. A Canadian-Palestinian pediatrician an urologist named Jehad Abudaia said that inbreeding is the reason why pseudohermaphrodite births are relatively prevalent. Acause Gaza haes a lawer staundart o medical care than mony places in the Wastren warld, pseudohermaphrodite conditions aften go undetectit for years efter the births occur.[8]
