Chicxulub, Yucatán
Chicxulub (Mayan pronunciation: [tʃʼikʃuluɓ]) is a toun, an surroondin municipality o the same name, in the Mexican state o Yucatán.
At the census o 2005, the toun haed a population o 5,052 fowk.
Chicxulub is maist famous for bein near the geografic centre o the Chicxulub crater, an impact crater discovered bi geologists on the Yucatán Peninsulae an extendin intae the ocean. It wis creatit bi the impact o an asteroid some 65 million years ago which mey hae caused the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, which led tae the demise o the dinosaurs. The coastal veelage (or puerto) o Chicxulub, 6 km east o the nearest toun, Progreso, lees amaist exactly on the geografic centre o the crater.
The name Chicxulub is Yucatec Maya leid, whaur ch’ic means "flae" or "tick", an xulub’ means "deil, demon, or horns".[1]
