Name eedit
The name Castano maist probably derives frae the auld "Silvae Castanae" (chestnut firths). Ither sources suggest the oreeginal name wis in fact "Castro Casteno", as toun wis close tae a castle or ither fortification. Those sources point tae a ancient crest or shield o the toun that depicts a red castle frae which grows a leafy chestnut tree, still shown the day on the stem o the current cooncil. The suffix "Primo" wis addit bi the then Keeng o Italy, Victor Emmanuel II o Italy, bi a decree datit 10 Dizember 1863 tae distinguish Castano frae anither toun o the same name in the Province o Pavia.
